Redland Art Gallery, The MezzRedland Performing Arts Centre, Cleveland
A single cyanotype, shown at Redland Art Gallery's Mezz space over the summer.
The subject is a pair of infant shoes. The process matters as much as the image: cyanotype starts as blank, high-quality paper, is stained a deep blue, and only finds its warmth once it is exposed to the sun.

In Meg’s words
My practice is driven to embrace and express my Inner Child. Infant shoes depict innocence, trust and hope. My infancy was cut short, removing those depictions.
Inner Child has to be cyanotype, with its deep dark blue sadness. It is high-quality paper, blank and impressionable, representing the perfect newborn. Then stained, darkening its perspective, prior to finding its warmth in the sun.
Inner Child has no cause, but expressing that which was quietened, pure joyfulness. Kenny Rogers sang, “Youth only happens to you one time, or so I’ve been told. If you should miss it in your young time, have it when you’re old.”

In the catalogue's own words, Canaipa Connections is a collective of artists who each have some connection with Canaipa (Russell Island) and who have taken part in artist residencies on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). Meg exhibits with them, and the collective's work CORE 2023 appears in this catalogue.
CORE is built from carpet cores, recycled material, paint and polyurethane — a set of concentric painted rings the catalogue lists at 360 × 700 × 700 cm, so it is walked through rather than looked at. The outer rings point to the vibrancy and diversity of life in the tropical north; the centrepiece asks you to sit with the damage being done to it, cane burning and coral bleaching in particular.
